54 arrested over plot to disrupt Kano Sallah celebrations

The Kano State Police Command announced on Thursday that it had uncovered alleged plots by some “political thugs and enemies of the state” planning to use political regalia to disrupt the Hawan Daushe Durbar Celebration scheduled to be held in the evening of April 11, 2024, at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano.

The Kano police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Thursday.

“The joint security forces in the state are aware of these nefarious plans and have set the necessary machinery in motion to ensure the peaceful conduct of the Durbar activities, as well as the safety of all residents of the state, through the adequate deployment of manpower and equipment to strategic locations in the state.

“The Kano State Police Command is therefore making it categorically clear that whoever, under whatever guise, attempts to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the state will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law. Their sponsors will also be identified and dealt with accordingly.

“Sallah Durbar is not a political activity, and any display of political parties’ symbols, such as billboards and posters, is seen as a means of misinterpretation and could lead to the ultimate breakdown of law and order.

Politicians are advised to advise their supporters to view Sallah as a celebration of unity and tradition,” Haruna stated.

He further noted, “During the Hawan Eid Sallah Day, a total of 54 suspected thugs were arrested, and dangerous weapons and illicit drugs were recovered from them.

The suspects will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.

“The public should note that the Kano State Police Command encourages continued collaboration and cooperation from all stakeholders to collectively build a safer and more secure environment for all.

Everyone is urged to report any suspicious movements of person(s) or item(s) they come across to the nearest police station.”
