Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on religious leaders to prioritize prayer and guidance for governments rather than cursing them.
She made this statement during the opening ceremony of the four-day International Conference of the African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) in Abuja, which is themed “Value-based leadership model for Africa.”
Represented by Princess Gloria Akobundu, National Coordinator and CEO of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, Tinubu addressed the challenges facing leadership in Africa today. She urged spiritual leaders to foster peace and support those in power through prayer, rather than resorting to insults and curses.
“To our spiritual fathers, I urge you to build and foster peace and development as well as to pray for the government. Let us not curse, insult and castigate the government. Rather, speak the truth to the leaders and conscience of our citizens,” she stated.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of humility, reminding attendees that “God can use anybody to achieve his purpose and fulfill His agenda here on earth.” She stressed that Africa is at a critical juncture, facing numerous challenges that require effective leadership.

“As Christian leaders, we must embrace a value-based leadership model that reflects the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. This model must be built on justice, integrity, wisdom and social harmony,” she added.
In his address, Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, echoed the need for effective leadership. He prayed for the emergence of conscientious and compassionate leaders across African nations.
“Leadership is not merely a position of authority but a calling to serve with integrity and purpose,” Okoh emphasized. He underscored the importance of aligning thoughts and actions with higher principles of truth, noting that Africa has a unique opportunity to lead by example amid its rich diversity and potential.
He further pointed out the critical need for leaders who embody biblical values during challenging times. “We face numerous challenges, such as economic uncertainties, insecurity, social injustices, and conflicts that threaten our unity and progress.
Our leadership must be grounded in love and unity. As we strive to uplift our communities and nations, we must commit ourselves to the principles in the scripture, which are centered on what is noble and pure,” Okoh concluded.
