Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the need for Nigeria to leverage its pool of skilled professionals to foster economic growth.
Speaking at a valedictory program for outgoing Vice-Chancellor Prof.
Chinedum Babalola at Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Obasanjo criticized the continued reliance on what he termed “mediocre” leadership, which he believes has subjected Nigerians to harsh economic conditions.
He pointed out that Nigeria is home to many capable individuals who can drive the nation toward a more prosperous future.
“Nobody will do it for us, we have to do it for ourselves and I believe there are people everywhere and we just have to look for them,” he stated.
Obasanjo highlighted that two major development banks in Africa and the World Trade Organization (WTO) are headed by Nigerians, referencing Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who leads the WTO, and Aminat Muhammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The former president urged Nigerians to look inward and diversify the economy through sectors like agriculture, tourism, industry, and education.
He shared a historical perspective, recalling that during his time as head of state, Nigeria had a thriving shipping line with five ships and 19 new ones ordered under his administration.
However, he lamented the decline of this sector, stating, “Coming back as a democratically-elected president in 1999, 20 years after, the 19 brand new ships have gone.”
He recounted a troubling story about the fate of one of those ships, which was sold for half a million dollars and later had to be repurchased for two million dollars, illustrating the mismanagement in the country’s maritime sector.
Obasanjo expressed deep concern over the state of Nigeria Airways, stating, “If you go through the story of Nigeria Airways you will weep for Nigeria. Most of the people who did this got away with it because there were no consequences.”

He criticized the lack of accountability in cases of corruption, citing an example of a former police pension scheme official who received a lenient sentence after stealing a significant amount of money.
“Now what do you do? Why would anybody tomorrow not go and steal?” he questioned, highlighting the need for stricter consequences for corrupt practices.
He commended Dr. Winfred Awosika, the founder and visitor of Chrisland University, for her commitment to investing in the education sector in Nigeria.
Obasanjo also praised Prof. Babalola for elevating the institution to new heights during his tenure, acknowledging the importance of educational leadership in shaping the future of the nation.
Obasanjo’s remarks reflect a broader call for Nigerians to harness their capabilities and address the challenges facing the country with renewed vigor and commitment.
