Sinach Responds to N5bn Lawsuit by Producer of ‘Way Maker’: “I Paid Him N150k”

Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Kalu-Egbu, popularly known as Sinach, has addressed the N5 billion lawsuit filed against her by music producer Michael Oluwole, aka Maye, who is seeking co-ownership of her hit song Way Maker.

Sinach denied the claims, stating that Maye’s role in the song was limited to mixing, for which he was paid N150,000 ($300) several years ago. As a result, she insists that she owes him no co-ownership of the track.

The lawsuit, filed by Maye for alleged copyright infringement, has attracted widespread attention from netizens, with many expressing support for the gospel music star.

Way Maker, which was released in 2016, quickly became a global hit. The song has been translated into several languages and is credited with having a significant impact on the lives of Sinach’s fans worldwide.

In the lawsuit, Maye is demanding a declaration that he is the co-author and co-owner of Way Maker, alongside general damages amounting to N5 billion for the alleged infringement of his rights. The case, filed under the suit number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, is centered on Maye’s claim to a share in the song’s ownership.

Sinach, however, has vehemently denied Maye’s claims, asserting that she is the sole author of Way Maker. She further emphasized that her global recognition as a gospel artist came prior to the release of the song, and she does not owe any ownership rights to the producer.

The trial, which began on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the Federal High Court in Lagos, has been adjourned to January 29 and 30, 2025.
