Court Grant N10m bail to Woman accused of threatening Tinubu’s son, IG

The Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to Olamide Thomas on Monday, the woman accused of threatening Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, with a ₦10 million bond and one surety in the same amount.

Thomas was arrested and charged on December 20 for allegedly threatening Seyi Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, through a viral social media post.

The police counsel, A.A. Egwu, filed the charges under suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/636/2024, naming Thomas as the sole defendant.

According to the charges, Thomas is accused of transmitting a video in which she made threats in Yoruba, stating that “Mr. Seyi Tinubu would die this year, and misfortune and calamity had befallen the Tinubu family.”

The charge claims that the transmission was meant to intimidate and threaten Seyi Tinubu, causing him to fear for his life. This act allegedly violates Section 24 (2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

Additionally, the second charge alleges Thomas transmitted a video that threatened Egbetokun, causing him to fear for his safety.

The third charge accuses her of sending a message threatening Adejobi, saying, “The children of Adejobi would all die before his eyes” and “he (Adejobi) will bury all his children in a single day.”

This was also intended to cause Adejobi to fear for the lives of his children, violating the same section of the Cybercrimes Act.

During her arraignment on December 20, Thomas pleaded not guilty to all charges and was remanded in the Suleja Correctional Centre.

At a hearing on December 31, Justice Emeka Nwite reserved judgment on her bail application after hearing arguments from Thomas’s defense lawyer, T.J. Aondo, and prosecutor Victor Okoye.

On Monday, although Thomas was not present in court, her case was represented by lawyer Seprebofa Oyeghe.

Justice Nwite ruled that there was insufficient evidence from the prosecution to suggest that Thomas would abscond or disrupt the trial. “Where the accused person would not jump bail or interfere with the trial, it is in the interest of justice for the court to grant the bail request of the applicant,” he said.

The court also outlined conditions for the bail, requiring the surety to provide an affidavit of means, three years’ tax clearance, proof of residence within the court’s jurisdiction, and two recent passport-sized photographs to be deposited with the court registrar.

The surety’s address must also be verified.

“I have carefully examined the affidavit evidence of both the defendant and the complainant and hold that there is no concrete evidence placed before me that the defendant will jump bail,” Justice Nwite added.

The court adjourned the case to February 18 for trial.
