Nigerians Outraged as Ondo, Osun, Ekiti States Spend N1.6 Billion on Honorarium and Sitting Allowances in Nine Months Amid Economic Hardship and Revenue Shortages

Amid Nigeria’s economic challenges and mounting concerns over the adequacy of government revenues, a recent review of budget performance documents for South-West states has sparked outrage among Nigerians.

The report revealed by SaharaReports states that three states in the region—Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo—spent a staggering N1.6 billion on honorarium and sitting allowances between January and September 2024.

According to the budget review, Ekiti State spent N766.3 million on honorarium within the nine-month period, while Osun State allocated N764.3 million for similar expenses. Ondo State, though spending less, allocated N111.9 million for honorarium and sitting allowances, bringing the total expenditure in these three states to a combined N1.642 billion.

The report has raised concerns, particularly as the same states have budgeted even more for these allowances in the coming year. For instance, Osun State plans to allocate N1.6 billion in 2025 for honorarium and sitting allowances.

Additionally, the state is set to spend an eye-watering N2.5 billion on refreshment and meals. Similarly, Ondo State plans to allocate N70 million for refreshment and meals, and an additional N200 million for international travels, including training and other related expenses.

This expenditure is particularly alarming given the severe revenue constraints faced by many state governments.

Despite repeated complaints about the inadequacy of revenue, which relies heavily on federal allocations and loans, state governments continue to face financial challenges.

The increasing costs of servicing debts have only exacerbated the issue, further straining the already limited resources available for essential services.

The excessive spending on honorarium and sitting allowances has drawn sharp criticism from citizens, especially at a time when many states struggle to provide basic services such as healthcare, education, clean water, and adequate road infrastructure.

The discrepancy between these lavish expenditures and the lack of funding for critical sectors has fueled widespread anger, with many questioning the accountability and probity of state governments in managing public funds.

As the 2025 fiscal year approaches, Nigerians are calling for greater transparency and a reallocation of funds to address the pressing needs of the people, rather than continue the tradition of excessive spending on non-essential allowances.

Many argue that the government’s priorities need urgent reevaluation, with more focus on improving the quality of life for citizens rather than enriching officials through hefty sitting allowances and other perks.
