NSCDC Apprehends 3 Over Illegal Mining and Armoured Cable Theft

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken decisive action against illegal activities in the region, apprehending three suspects linked to illegal mining and armoured cable theft.

According to a statement released by DSC Daniel Aidamenbor, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Akure, Ondo State. The arrests were made on August 13, 2024, following a series of coordinated operations in the state.

Aidamenbor said that two of the suspects were apprehended on Aug. 13 over illegal mining activities in the Oke-Igbo, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo areas of the state.

He said that the suspects, Modashiru Nasiru, 18, and Hassan Yaya, 19, were indulging in unlicensed mining activities.

The NSCDC has been actively monitoring the area due to reports of unauthorized mining activities, which have been detrimental to the environment and local communities. These young men were reportedly engaging in mining without the necessary licenses, thereby violating Nigeria’s mining laws.

In a separate but related operation, the NSCDC arrested a third suspect, Aloa Segun (40), who was found in possession of stolen armoured cables.

Aidamenbor said stolen cables, along with recline cables and a generator, were valued at approximately N3.3 million. These items were recovered during a thorough investigation, which revealed that Segun was part of a larger syndicate involved in the theft and resale of electrical infrastructure components.

The theft of armoured cables is a severe offense in Nigeria, as it disrupts the power supply and can have wide-reaching effects on local businesses and residents.

The NSCDC has emphasized its commitment to tackling illegal activities that threaten the security and economy of the state.

DSC Aidamenbor confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will face prosecution as soon as the investigations are concluded.
