Natural Gas: The Viable Alternative to Fuel Amid Fuel Hike

As Nigeria grapples with soaring fuel prices, natural gas is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional fuels. The recent fuel price hikes have sent shockwaves through the economy, affecting transportation costs, business operations, and daily life for many Nigerians.

Amid these challenges, the search for viable and sustainable alternatives becomes increasingly urgent. This article explores why natural gas could be the solution Nigeria needs and the potential benefits it offers.

The Current Fuel Crisis

In recent months, Nigeria has faced a significant increase in fuel prices, driven by a combination of factors including global oil price fluctuations, local supply issues, and subsidy removals. The government’s decision to phase out fuel subsidies has led to a dramatic rise in fuel costs, with petrol prices nearly doubling in some regions. This price surge has led to widespread economic strain, affecting everything from public transportation to the cost of goods and services.

According to a report by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the removal of subsidies and the subsequent fuel price increase are part of broader economic reforms aimed at reducing government expenditure and promoting market efficiency. However, the immediate impact on consumers has been severe, prompting a search for more affordable and sustainable fuel options.

What is Natural Gas?

Natural gas is a fossil fuel primarily composed of methane (CHâ‚„), a simple hydrocarbon. It is found in underground rock formations or associated with other fossil fuels such as coal or oil. Natural gas is often extracted through drilling and can be processed and transported via pipelines or in its liquefied form (LNG). It is used for various purposes, including electricity generation, heating, and as a feedstock in chemical industries.

According to Vedantu, natural gas is less dense than petrol and does not require complex refining processes. It is a cleaner-burning fuel, producing fewer emissions compared to petrol. Natural gas combustion emits primarily carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) and water vapor, with significantly lower amounts of sulfur dioxide (SOâ‚‚) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), making it a more environmentally friendly option

What is Petrol (Crude Oil)?

Petrol, or gasoline, is a liquid fuel derived from crude oil through a refining process. Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons found in geological formations beneath the earth’s surface. It undergoes fractional distillation and other refining processes to produce various petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, kerosene, and others. Petrol is primarily used as fuel for internal combustion engines in vehicles.

Petrol is more energy-dense than natural gas, which means it contains more energy per unit volume. However, its combustion produces a higher volume of pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Natural Gas as an Alternative

Natural gas, often touted for its environmental and economic benefits, is gaining attention as a viable alternative to petrol and diesel. Here’s why natural gas could be Nigeria’s next solution:

  1. Cost-Effectiveness: Natural gas is generally cheaper than petrol and diesel. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), natural gas prices are less volatile compared to oil, making it a more stable and affordable option in the long term. In Nigeria, where natural gas is abundant, leveraging this resource could help stabilize fuel costs and reduce dependency on imported fuels.
  2. Environmental Benefits: Natural gas is a cleaner-burning fuel compared to petrol and diesel, producing fewer greenhouse gases and pollutants. The Nigerian Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) highlights that switching to natural gas can significantly reduce air pollution, contributing to improved public health and environmental sustainability.
  3. Abundant Domestic Supply: Nigeria is one of the top natural gas producers in Africa, with significant reserves that remain underutilized. The Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) reports that harnessing natural gas for domestic use could alleviate some of the pressures caused by fuel shortages and price hikes.
  4. Economic Opportunities: Economic considerations are crucial when comparing natural gas and petrol. In Nigeria, for instance, natural gas is approximately 400% cheaper than petrol. This cost disparity makes natural gas an attractive option for both consumers and businesses looking to reduce energy expenses. The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) emphasizes that expanding the natural gas sector can lead to increased investment, technology transfer, and skills development.

Current Initiatives and Challenges

The Nigerian government and private sector have begun to explore natural gas as an alternative fuel source. Initiatives such as the National Gas Policy and the Nigerian Gas Master Plan aim to promote the use of natural gas across various sectors, including transportation, power generation, and industrial processes.

Currently, in response to the fuel price crisis, the Tinubu administration has launched a program offering free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversions across several states. This initiative aims to promote the use of natural gas in transportation, providing a cost-effective alternative to petrol.

However, several challenges remain.

Expanding the use of natural gas involves significant investment in various types of infrastructure. To facilitate a broader adoption, there needs to be a robust network that includes pipelines, refueling stations, and distribution systems. Currently, the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC) highlights that the absence of comprehensive infrastructure hampers the widespread use of natural gas. Without a well-developed network, it becomes challenging to deliver natural gas efficiently to consumers and businesses.

Additionally, public awareness plays a crucial role in the transition to natural gas. Educating people about the benefits of natural gas and its availability can drive higher adoption rates. Initiatives such as the Gas-to-Mobility program are designed to promote the conversion of vehicles to natural gas. By increasing public awareness and demonstrating the advantages of natural gas over other fuels, such initiatives aim to boost demand and encourage a shift in energy use.

Moreover, a supportive regulatory and policy framework is essential to facilitate this transition. Effective policies and regulations can create an environment conducive to investment and development in the natural gas sector. The Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialization Programme (NGFCP) is an example of such efforts, addressing regulatory challenges and encouraging investments.

This program seeks to manage gas flaring, which is a significant issue in the industry, and convert it into a viable resource. By improving regulations and policies, governments can help overcome barriers to the adoption of natural gas and promote its use as a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional fuels
