FG Begins Emergency Repairs on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

The Federal Government has initiated emergency repairs on the deteriorating 7 km stretch of the Lagos-Sango-Otta-Abeokuta road, a crucial route that has faced significant neglect in recent years.

This announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement issued by the Special Adviser Media to the Minister of Works, Uchenna Orji.

In the statement, Orji emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing the pressing infrastructure issues affecting commuters.

“The road has been bad for some time, and the Federal Ministry of Works is bringing relief on the dilapidated sections in conjunction with the concessionaire,” he said.

According to him, the repair initiative is part of a broader strategy under the ‘Operation Free Our Roads’ program, aimed at enhancing the condition of federal roadways across the nation.

Orji stated, “The Federal Ministry of Works under the watch of His Excellency, Sen. Engr. Nweze David Umahi CON, is committed to providing relief to motorists and commuters on all the federal roads nationwide.”

He noted that motorists and residents have long expressed frustration over the road’s condition, which has led to increased travel times and safety concerns.

“With these emergency repairs underway, the government aims to restore smooth transit for the thousands who rely on this vital route daily,” he noted.

The 81-kilometre expressway, which links Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, to Ikeja, the capital of Lagos, is one of Nigeria’s busiest inter-state roads, handling approximately 250,000 Passenger Car Units (PCU) daily.

However, a large portion of the road has been in a deplorable condition, causing a decline in business activity, increasing vehicle maintenance costs, and endangering the lives of road users.

For example, the section of the road from Meiran to the Toll Gate has been particularly problematic, creating stress for both commuters and motorists.
