Federal High Court Commences Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Federal High Court Chapter, has initiated an indefinite strike following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum given to the federal government.

The strike comes in response to the government’s failure to implement the new minimum wage, 25% and 35% salary increases, and a wage award.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Comrade Samuel Ikpatt, Chairman of the Federal High Court Chapter of JUSUN, confirmed that the strike affects all federal courts, as staff members have not received payments owed to them under the new wage structure.

Workers in the Federal High Court, Appeal Court, Supreme Court, and National Industrial Court are reportedly owed salary arrears.

The statement, obtained by SaharaReporters, revealed that the union had previously issued a warning to the government, advising that industrial action would be taken if their demands were not addressed by the deadline of January 23, 2025.

“Sequel to the attached circular from our union National Secretariat, write to notify the Management that we shall be proceeding on an indefinite strike action after the expiration of Twenty-one (21) days this notice commencing from Thursday, the 23rd of January, 2025,” the statement read.

The statement further emphasized that the strike could still be avoided if urgent measures are taken to ensure that payment is made to the union members before the notice expires.

Comrade Ikpatt added, “The above resolved is as a result of inaction on the non-implementation of the new minimum wage, 25% & 35% of salary increase and the We Award.”

He reiterated that the strike could be called off if the government meets the union’s demands in a timely manner, urging for immediate action to address the outstanding payments.
