A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Kwara State was allegedly assaulted by two teachers at the Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, on Thursday.
The incident occurred when the corps member, who had visited the school to collect her clearance letter, was reportedly confronted for failing to greet the teachers properly.
Eyewitnesses claim that the teacher initially attacked the corps member, tearing her NYSC white T-shirt, and was joined by another teacher who slapped her. The altercation has sparked public outrage, raising concerns about respect, professionalism, and abuse of power within educational institutions.
Morakinyo Oladipo, the head of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC in Kwara State, confirmed the incident and assured that the scheme would seek redress. He added that the state government had been informed through the Ministry of Youth, the supervising ministry for the NYSC.
“The NYSC has formally informed the state government, and action has been taken since the news broke,” Oladipo said. He also mentioned that the corps member would be temporarily reposted to help her overcome the trauma. “We’re writing a rejoinder and taking necessary steps to seek redress,” he added.

Oladipo also addressed the issue of disciplinary action, stating that the law would take its course. “We expect investigation and proper action against those who abused the corps member,” he said.
On Friday, the Kwara State government condemned the incident, emphasizing that disciplinary measures would be taken against the teacher involved.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, described the teacher’s behavior as unacceptable.
“The concerned teacher has been summoned, and necessary disciplinary procedures will follow,” Modibbo-Kawu said. She also urged all parties to remain law-abiding, adding, “We ask the NYSC and others involved to carry out their duties without fear.”
The teacher allegedly involved in the assault was identified as Mrs. Fatima Hamzat, who accused the corps member of disrespect. The case is currently under investigation, and the Kwara State government has promised to take appropriate action.
