FG Declares Monday Eid-Maulid Public Holiday

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday, September 16, 2024, a public holiday in commemoration of Eid-Maulid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

This announcement was made on Friday in a statement by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

In the statement, the federal government congratulated the Muslim Ummah, both in Nigeria and the Diaspora, on the occasion. Dr. Tunji-Ojo also called on Muslims to use this period to pray for lasting peace and prosperity in the country. “We implore the Muslim Ummah to use this opportunity to pray for enduring peace and a more prosperous egalitarian nation,” the minister said.

Furthermore, the minister urged Muslims and all Nigerians to embrace the values of patience, sacrifice, and resilience, reflecting on these virtues during the celebration. The Eid-Maulid is observed as a public holiday, with most businesses and schools closed to allow for nationwide participation.

It is noteworthy that the 2024 Eid-Maulid falls on a Sunday, thus prompting the government to declare the following Monday as the public holiday to ensure proper observance of the celebration.
