Meanwhile, The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand includes a total of 32 top national football teams, each with 23 players in their squads.
Any one of those could win the coveted Golden Boot award for being the top goalscorer at the tournament. If two or more players finish with the same number of goals scored, the Golden Boot will be given to the player with most assists, and if that doesn’t separate the players it’ll be based on lowest minutes played. Goals scored in penalty shootouts do not count.
The 2019 edition was won by Megan Rapinoe of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), who scored six goals for the USA at the tournament in France.
USA’s Sophia Smith (pictured) went top of the race for the Golden Boot with two goals and an assist in her side’s opening 3-0 win over Vietnam.
A favourite to take home the award, Alexandra Popp responded to Smith’s outing with two goals of her own in Germany’s rout of debutants Morocco in a 6-0 win, before adding her third of the tournament in defeat to Colombia.
On Monday 24 July, the tournament witnessed its first hat-trick as Brazil dominated Panama in a 4-0 win. Ary Borges was the player on hand to net three, before also turning provider for Beatriz Zaneratto to record four goal involvements in her World Cup debut, immediately flying to the top of the Golden Boot charts.

Amanda Ilestedt joined her on three with two goals in Sweden’s thrashing of Italy on Saturday 29 July, to add to her opening game goal against South Africa. Sophie Haug then scored a hat-trick for Norway in their thrashing of Philippines to round out the group stage and move her joint top of the scoring charts.
On the final day of action in Group D, England ran rampant 6-1 which saw Lauren James involved in five of those goals – scoring two and assisting three. Elsewhere, France booked their spot in the knockout rounds with a thumping victory over Panama, in which Kadidiatou Diani scored a hat-trick.
