A fire erupted in the early hours of this morning, Friday, at a seven-storey building on Sanni Adewale Street in the Lagos Island Local Government Area.
The blaze, which affected several shops within the building, was reported at approximately 5:17 a.m. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, under the direction of Margaret Adeseye, responded swiftly to the emergency call.
According to Adeseye’s statement on X.com, “On August 16th, 2024, at 05:17 hours, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at Sanni Adewale Street, located in the Lagos Island Local Government Area. The fire affected several shops within a 7-storey building.” Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations were immediately dispatched and arrived at the scene by 05:33 hours.
The fire, which reportedly began due to an electrical surge, caused significant damage to the building and its contents. Preliminary investigations have confirmed that no casualties were reported, but the incident led to considerable panic among local residents, who were seen scrambling for safety as the flames spread.
Adeseye confirmed, “Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations were dispatched immediately after receiving a distress call and arrived at the scene by 5:33 a.m.” She emphasized that the situation has been brought under control, with the fire now extinguished.
Channels mentioned that the blaze destroyed numerous items valued at millions of naira, affecting several businesses within the building. Emergency crews worked diligently to prevent further spread and manage the aftermath of the fire.
