A close to 12 hours’ torrential rainfall has submerge houses and swept away properties and valuables in parts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The rain which started Thursday night at about 7am fell through the night until about 6:30am leaving most parts of the town submerged.
Areas badly affected by the downpour includes Wurukum Market, Ishaya Bakut Road, Idye, Naka road, Nyima BIPC housing estate, Kighir village, Achussa, Gyado Villa, Agwan Jukun, Wadata Rice mill, Akpe communities among other.
In the affected areas residents were seen making frantic effort to rescue their belongings from the fast rising flood.
At Ishaya Bakut Road, the residential house, hotels, schools and business outlets located behind the Police Zone 4 Headquarters were all submerged.
Traders at the popular Wurukum Market were also seen trying to rescue their wears from the flood which took over parts of the Market.
The New Otukpo Road near the NNPC Mega Station was also taken over by the flood leaving motorists and motorcyclists battles to drive through the road.

Some of the victims of the flood who lamented their ordeal appealed to the Government to come to their aid.
A trader at the rice mill, James Kuran, who claimed he lost over 30 bags of rice to the flood, lamented that he bought the goods few days ago only to lose large quantity of them to the flood.
He said “I brought in about 50 bags of milled rice four days ago for sale and packed them in the store only for this flood to submerge the store and about 30 of the bags got submerged.
“I don’t know how to go about the loss given the economic situation in the country. I appeal to the government to come to our aid because this is a serious situation and slot of people have been affected by the flood.”
