Germany launches online portal for visa applications amid shortage of foreign workers

Germany has launched the Consular Services Portal, a global online platform designed to simplify the visa application process for individuals seeking to work, study, or join family members in the country.

The digital portal, hailed by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock as “a real administrative revolution,” became operational on January 1, 2025.

“What started with one visa application and three pilot visa sections will now become digital reality at all 167 visa sections at German missions around the world. 28 categories of national visa can now be applied for online, Baerbock said.”

This move, initiated two years ago, marks a significant shift from traditional paperwork to a streamlined digital process across all 167 visa sections of German missions worldwide.

The new system accommodates 28 categories of national visas, including those for employment, education, training, and family reunification.

This new plateform will help in addressing the skilled worker shortage. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted the importance of this digital transition, saying, “Every year, Germany is short of at least 400,000 skilled workers… We need a national visa process that is state-of-the-art – modern, digital, and secure.”

“At times like these, we cannot afford to downright put the best off coming here to roll up their sleeves because of long paper application forms and even longer waiting periods.”

Germany, facing a pressing demand for skilled professionals in sectors like healthcare, technology, and skilled trades, is now prioritizing efficiency in its visa process. This digital overhaul aims to attract global talent while eliminating long delays and cumbersome paper applications.

The Consular Services Portal is designed to simplify and expedite the visa application process. By replacing postal submissions with an entirely online system, applicants can expect reduced waiting times for appointments. Businesses, especially those in urgent need of skilled labor, stand to benefit from this modernized system.

Foreign Minister Baerbock described the reform as “a real administrative revolution” that aligns with Europe’s most modern immigration laws and strengthens Germany’s position as a competitive global economy.

“The online visa application process is a real administrative revolution that both craft businesses and major companies have been calling for for a long time. It will strengthen Germany as a business location, He said.

The Federal Foreign Office plans further improvements, including enabling joint applications for families and authorized representatives. This continued digitalization reflects Germany’s commitment to maintaining its status as a forward-looking, immigration-friendly nation.

Whether you want to work or study in Germany, whether you want to do a training course or join other members of your family, you can now apply for these national visas from any visa section in the world online via the Consular Services Portal.

This will cut out postal deliveries and reduce long waits for appointments. Following a pilot phase, in four cycles, the Federal Foreign Office linked all other visa sections to the Consular Services Portal, digitalising the relevant visa applications for employment, studies, training and family reunification.

By simplifying visa access, Germany hopes to attract skilled workers and ensure a more inclusive and responsive immigration system in line with modern demands.
