Huawei unveils world’s first trifold smartphone after Apple’s AI iPhone launch

Huawei officially launched the Mate XT in a keynote presentation by Huawei executive Richard Yu at the firm’s headquarters in the southern city of Shenzhen.

The presentation highlighted the company’s continued leadership in the foldable phone sector.

Originally designed as a premium device for a niche audience, the Mate XT attracted over three million registrations of interest before its official launch.

Available in a sleek red and gold design, the Mate XT is set to go on sale from September 20, starting at 19,999 yuan ($2,800).

Yu emphasized the effort put into solving the mass production and reliability issues surrounding the innovative device.

“This is the world’s first triple-folding phone,” Yu announced, further underscoring Huawei‘s pioneering role in the foldable market. “We have put in a huge amount of effort into solving the problems regarding mass production and product reliability,” he added.

Despite being labeled as a niche product, the Mate XT garnered significant attention, signaling its potential to influence the foldable phone market globally. However, as of now, the Mate XT will only be available within Chinese markets.

The Huawei Mate XT boasts cutting-edge technology, including a dual-hinged trifold design that allows the device to be folded into three distinct modes.

Upon unfolding, the device expands into a large 10.2-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2232 x 3184, a 16:11 aspect ratio, and LTPO features. Users can also opt for a smaller 7.9-inch mode when partially unfolded.

Huawei claims that the Mate XT is among the thinnest foldable smartphones on the market, measuring just 3.6mm thick when fully unfolded into tablet mode.

Although Huawei has not disclosed the exact processor for the Mate XT, it is speculated to be powered by the Kirin 9000S chip, the same processor used in the Mate 60 Pro+ flagship model, offering 5G satellite connectivity.

The device runs on Huawei’s HarmonyOS 4.2, delivering a smooth and efficient user experience.

For photography enthusiasts, the Mate XT features a high-end camera system, including a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 12-megapixel periscope zoom lens with 5.5x optical zoom support.

On the front, the phone has an 8-megapixel selfie camera housed within a punch-hole cutout.

One of the standout features of the Mate XT is its 5,600mAh silicon carbon battery, which is touted as the world’s thinnest battery ever used in a smartphone. The battery supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, offering users fast and efficient power replenishment.

Huawei’s Mate XT will be available in multiple storage configurations, with the 16GB/256GB variant priced at 19,999 yuan ($2,800) and the 16GB/1TB version retailing for 23,999 yuan ($3,370), making it a premium option in the foldable phone market.
