The General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri, Borno State, is set to commence full international operations on January 1, 2025.
The announcement comes after a key one-day working visit to the airport by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, accompanied by several top executives from critical aviation agencies.
The delegation included Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); Farouk Umar, CEO of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA); Chris Najomo, Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), represented by Balang; and officials from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
During the visit, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State expressed his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Keyamo, commending the Minister’s leadership and efforts in advancing Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Governor Zulum reaffirmed the state government’s full commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to ensure the successful launch of international operations at the airport in 2025.
Minister Keyamo highlighted the project’s importance as a symbol of growth and resilience for the region, noting that the airport will be the first fully operational international airport in the North East Zone.
He emphasized that the newly upgraded airport, with its world-class runway and modern facilities, will not only serve as a gateway for international flights but will also function as a key regional cargo hub, benefiting the North East’s economy and fostering greater national integration.
The visit also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss logistical challenges and ensure that the transition to international operations runs smoothly.
The Federal Government is prioritizing the enhancement of Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, focusing on regional development to support economic growth and cohesion across the country.
