Mohbad: Protesters to Storm Lagos Assembly over Mohbad’s Death Probe

Nollywood actor and human rights advocate Yomi Fabiyi is set to lead a peaceful protest to demand justice for the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as MohBad. Fabiyi announced the protest on his Instagram page, stating it will take place on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The protest aims to call on the state government to establish a committee to investigate MohBad’s death. Fabiyi alleged that “those behind this heinous crime, those who cut Mohbad’s life short are spending millions upon millions of naira to see that they cover up the case, create distractions, and bury the many blatant evidence.”

He expressed confidence that “the CCTV cameras inside and outside Mohbad’s house were working, and they store remotely someone and not via DVR.” He urged the authorities to retrieve the camera footage, describing the police’s refusal to do so as “very frustrating.” He added, “the masses do not want to put the law into our hands by going to ask for it, hence we need the true representatives of the people of Lagos State to wade in and set up a committee to summon, visit and bring the truth out.”

Fabiyi called on citizens to participate in the protest and speak with one voice. “This struggle needs you. Be orderly and civil when attending,” he concluded.

MohBad passed away at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, and the circumstances surrounding his death have sparked widespread controversy on social media. As a former record label signee of Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, MohBad left the label in February 2022.

Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command established a 13-man special investigation team to probe the matter, resulting in the arrest of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry.

On September 21, 2023, MohBad’s body was exhumed for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. However, a pathologist testified before the Coroner’s Court on May 15 that the decomposition of the body prevented a conclusive determination.

Furthermore, a US-based lab, NMS Labs, refuted claims by the Lagos State Government that they conducted a toxicology test on MohBad’s samples, clarifying that they did not handle the case.

A subsequent statement from Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed that the samples were sent to NMS Labs via another lab, ITSI Biosciences, and testing was completed in April 2024.

The public sentiment has pushed authorities to take the matter more seriously, but frustrations remain regarding the perceived slow pace of the investigation.
