The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has publicly addressed allegations made by Senator Lola Ashiru, representing Kwara South, claiming that the agency is corrupt and compromised.
The NDLEA stated that these accusations stem from a personal vendetta rather than any genuine concern for public interest.
During a press briefing at its national headquarters in Abuja, NDLEA Spokesperson Femi Babafemi emphasized that the agency had conducted multiple raids on the senator’s residence in Ilorin, which was identified as a hub for illicit drug activities. Babafemi stated, “The NDLEA is compelled to call this press briefing today because of an unfortunate development earlier last week during plenary in the Nigerian Senate when some uncomplimentary, unfounded, defamatory remarks were made against the agency.”
He noted that while the NDLEA appreciates the Senate’s role in supporting national issues, it felt obligated to respond to Ashiru’s remarks made during a debate on establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation on October 15, 2024. “For a member of the upper chamber to have made such an unfounded and unwarranted categorical statement against the agency led us to look inward,” Babafemi explained.
The NDLEA revealed that Ashiru’s residence was raided on February 4, 2024, where drugs and illicit substances were seized, and two of his aides were arrested. “Based on credible intelligence and surveillance, the senator’s house was being used as a drug joint for drug dealers and users,” Babafemi said.
Additionally, the agency highlighted other encounters involving Ashiru’s associates linked to drug dealing. A raid in Offa, the senator’s hometown, led to the arrest of a suspect, Oluwatosin Odepidan, with drugs such as methamphetamine and cannabis. Despite attempts by the senator’s aides to drop charges against Odepidan, he was prosecuted and ultimately convicted.

In light of this context, the NDLEA concluded that Ashiru’s statements were likely motivated by the agency’s previous actions concerning drug-related activities linked to his associates. “These encounters must have been responsible for his outburst, and unfortunately, false allegations,” Babafemi noted.
The NDLEA maintains that despite the senator’s claims, it has received recognition from both local and international bodies for its ongoing efforts in combating substance abuse and drug trafficking. The agency reiterated its commitment to fighting drug-related issues in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of integrity and professionalism in its operations.
