NiDCOM Congratulates Four Nigerians Who Won Elections Abroad

Four Nigerians in the diaspora have made history by securing significant political positions in the United States and Australia, further solidifying the global influence of the Nigerian community.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) celebrated the accomplishments of Dr. Oye Owolewa, Chiaka Barry, Segun Adeyina, and Adeyemi Mobolade, whose electoral victories were hailed as milestones in their respective countries.

In the United States, Dr. Oye Owolewa was re-elected as the Shadow Representative for the District of Columbia under the Democratic Party. His role, which centers on advocating for Washington, DC’s statehood and local governance issues, is critical in a city that continues to push for full representation in Congress.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust and support of my constituents,” Owolewa said after his victory. “Together, we will continue our fight for DC statehood and the empowerment of our local communities.”

Meanwhile, in Georgia, Segun Adeyina secured a second term as State Representative for District 110. Adeyina, with over 25 years of experience in IT program and project management, has previously worked with Fortune 500 companies, including General Motors and Hewlett Packard.

“It is an honor to continue serving my community,” Adeyina remarked. “Together, we will build a stronger, more innovative future for Georgia.”

In a historic achievement, Adeyemi Mobolade, a Nigerian-American businessman, was elected the 42nd Mayor of Colorado Springs. Mobolade’s victory makes him the first Black person to hold this position in the city’s history. His election has been seen as a reflection of the city’s evolving political landscape.

“This is not just my victory, but a victory for all who believe in the promise of equality and progress,” Mobolade said, expressing his gratitude to voters.

Across the globe in Australia, Chiaka Barry won a seat in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislative Assembly, representing the Ginninderra District under the Liberal Party. With a wealth of experience in law, policy development, and community service, Barry’s victory marks a significant step forward for diversity in Australian politics.

“I am honored to serve the people of Ginninderra, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that our voices are heard,” Barry stated after her election.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), through a statement from its Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, congratulated the four victors for breaking new ground in their respective political arenas.

NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended their achievements, recognizing them as role models who have set high standards in the political spheres of their countries of residence.

“I am immensely proud of these outstanding individuals who have not only achieved success but have also become symbols of excellence and resilience,” said Hon. Dabiri-Erewa. “Their victories demonstrate the strength and potential of the Nigerian diaspora, and they have made us all proud.”

Dabiri-Erewa also wished the winners continued success in their roles, urging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to serving their communities. “As you take on these new responsibilities, may you be granted strength, wisdom, and guidance to make a lasting impact,” she added.

The statement also highlighted the backgrounds of each of the victors. Dr. Owolewa, a pharmacist, has consistently championed issues related to healthcare and local governance in Washington, DC. Chiaka Barry, a legal officer, has worked extensively in alternative dispute resolution, litigation, and policy development, while Segun Adeyina’s career in IT has seen him take on leadership roles in major corporations.

Adeyemi Mobolade, whose business acumen has driven his political aspirations, now stands as a trailblazer in Colorado Springs.

Their collective victories stand as a testament to the growing political engagement and influence of the Nigerian diaspora, both in the United States and beyond.
