Tension is building in Kano as policemen have barricaded the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II’s palace, preventing him from attending a royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area.
The event, which was set to feature the presentation of a staff of office to a new District Head of Bichi, was disrupted by the heavy presence of security personnel.
A source within the Kano Emirate revealed that heavily armed security forces, including armoured personnel carriers (APCs), surrounded the entrance of the Emir’s palace, halting all movement.
“The Emir has been on the phone trying to understand what is happening. He was prepared to leave for the ceremony when the security operatives arrived and ordered him to remain indoors,” the anonymous source stated.
Efforts by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to intervene also faced setbacks. His delegation was reportedly denied entry into the palace.
“His Excellency sent representatives to meet with the Emir and mediate, but even they were not allowed past the barricade,” said a source close to the state government.
Meanwhile, the venue of the Bichi event was also cordoned off by security personnel, causing confusion among attendees and organizers who were left stranded.
When contacted for comment, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Haruna declined to provide any statement, saying, “I cannot comment on the matter at this time.”
The incident has sparked widespread speculation regarding the reasons behind the action, with some suggesting political undertones. However, neither the state government nor the Emirate Council has issued an official statement on the matter.

In a show of resilience, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, made a bold appearance in full traditional regalia to preside over his routine court session at the palace, despite the siege being laid by security operatives on Friday.
Accompanied by palace aides, the Emir maintained his composure and carried out the proceedings within the barricaded palace walls.
The Kano State Police Command has yet to provide an explanation for the siege, which has only intensified speculation about the ongoing tensions surrounding the royal situation in the state.
Additionally, no official statement has been issued by the Kano Emirate Council regarding the Emir’s previously scheduled royal visit to Bichi for the event. Questions remain about whether he will proceed with the engagement as planned.
Reports from the Government House also revealed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is currently out of the country on an official trip to India, leaving the situation without immediate political resolution.
This has further fueled curiosity and speculation among residents and observers, with many questioning whether the unfolding events point to a larger political standoff.
