A violent clash between two notorious cult groups, the Baggar Confraternity and the Axe Men, has resulted in another fatality in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, as the conflict enters its fourth day.
The latest victim, identified as Comrade David Isangedighi, a 40-year-old principal of Rivera School in Marina, Oron, was brutally beheaded by members of the Baggar Confraternity on Wednesday night. His headless body was subsequently deposited at the Oron General Hospital mortuary.
Eyewitness accounts describe Isangedighi’s murder as a shocking escalation of violence between the rival groups.
His killing follows the deaths of two others at the hands of the Baggar Confraternity, while the Axe Men have been linked to one murder since the outbreak of hostilities earlier in the week.
Local sources indicate that the cult conflict has been brewing for some time, fueled by territorial disputes and a quest for dominance. Residents are now living in fear as parts of Oron have turned into a battleground. “Ho! My head!” were reportedly Isangedighi’s last words during the assault, underscoring the brutal nature of the attack.
The community is reeling from the impact of these violent acts, particularly those connected to Rivera School, where Isangedighi served as principal. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the educational institution, leaving students and staff grappling with the loss of their leader.
In response to the escalating violence, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, confirmed the killings during a press conference at the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan-Abia, Uyo.
He stated that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murders, including individuals believed to be involved in the earlier violence.

The police reported that on October 16, 2024, they were alerted to the presence of a corpse exhibiting signs of violence.
The deceased, Paul Eyo, a suspected member of one of the cult groups, was found with machete wounds. Another victim, identified as Ekpe, a principal of a local high school, was also beheaded.
As the community mourns, residents are calling on the state government and security forces to take decisive action to end the violence and restore peace.
Authorities have yet to release a comprehensive statement on the ongoing situation, but police and security personnel are reportedly being mobilized to ensure the safety of residents and property.
