The Super Eagles of Nigeria have risen three places to 36th in the latest FIFA rankings, released on Thursday. This advancement comes after the team secured a narrow victory over Libya in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier earlier this month.
With a total of 1,503.29 points, Nigeria is now ranked fourth on the African continent, following the Atlas Lions of Morocco, who lead Africa at 13th globally, and Senegal, currently in 20th place.
Egypt (30th) and Algeria (37th) round out the top five African teams.
FIFA highlighted the progress of two other African teams in this edition of the rankings: Comoros (108th) and Sudan (110th), both of whom gained significant ground after successful outings against Tunisia and Ghana, respectively, in their recent AFCON qualifiers.
Globally, Argentina remains at the top, closely followed by France in second place. Spain holds the third position, while England, Brazil, and Belgium occupy the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots, respectively.
The rankings also saw Portugal (7th) and Italy (9th) making slight gains, while the Netherlands (8th) and Colombia (10th) dropped one spot each.
October 2024 has been a particularly busy month in international football, with numerous qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the CAF Africa Cup of Nations taking place.
