Three arrested with fake N129bn currencies in Kano

Kano State Police Command has Intercepted counterfeit Currencies equivalent to a total sum of One Hundred and Twenty-nine Billion, Five Hundred and Forty-two Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty-three Thousand Naira (N129,542,823,000).

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the arrest of the suspects on Tuesday.

In a press conference at the Command’s headquarters in Kano Tuesday, the police spokesman DSP Haruna Kiyawa said the Police has also recovered three Million Three Hundred and Sixty-six Thousand Counterfeit Dollars ($3,366,000).

“Following credible information received from a good Samaritan on the activities of a notorious fraudster around Gwale LGA, Kano State, one Ahmad Abdullahi, ‘m’, 30 years old of Kaga LGA, Borno State.

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Salman Dogo Garba directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Gwale Division Kano, SP Abdurrahim Adamu to lead a team of detectives and ensure the arrest of the suspect. On 1st December, 2024.

“During the course of the investigation, counterfeit currencies equivalent to a total sum of One Hundred and Twenty-nine Billion, Five Hundred and Forty-two Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty-three Thousand Naira (N129,542,823,000) were recovered” Kiyawa state.

He said the police detectives, recovered another foreign currency, the sum of Fifty-one Million Nine Hundred and Seventy Thousand Counterfeit Cefa (CFA51,970,000) and one Million Four Hundred and Forty-three Thousand Naira (N1,443,000) respectively.

He said the counterfeit currencies included the US dollars, CFA and naira as those also stolen from another dealer of the funds.

“Counterfeit currencies equivalent to a total sum of N129,542,823,000 were recovered,” Kiyawa said. He said the fake currencies included $3,366,000, CFA51,970,000 and N1,443,000.

According to him, two suspects were arrested with the money and the other person from whom the money was stolen had been apprehended and are currently in police custody assisting the police with the investigation of the actual producers of the counterfeit money.

“The team succeeded in arresting one Nura Ibrahim, ‘m’, 26 years old, of Sharada Quarters, Kano. Further investigation led to the arrest of another suspect, Mohammed Muktar, ‘m’, 35 years old of Hotoro Quarters Kano.

Discreet investigation conducted at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) led to the arrest of the principal suspect, Ahmad Abdullahi, ‘m’, 30 years old, of Kaga LGA, Borno State.”

Haruna said the command had recovered six live ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles and three parcels of 175 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police spokesperson further revealed that the command had recovered 250 pieces of diazepam tablets, 278 sheep and seven cattle as part of recoveries made by its operatives.

“These approaches have resulted not only in the apprehension of criminals but also deterred potential offenders from engaging in criminal activities.

“Major cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, thuggery and drug dealings have been surmounted,” Haruna said.
