Tyson Fury, the former world heavyweight champion, has declared his retirement from professional boxing.
The announcement comes after his most recent fight in December, where he suffered a defeat in his rematch against Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO heavyweight titles.
This marks the second time the Briton has announced his departure from the sport. The 36-year-old Fury previously announced his retirement after beating Dillian Whyte in April 2022 but returned six months later. Throughout his career, Fury has achieved remarkable success, holding the heavyweight title on two separate occasions and amassing an impressive record of 34 wins, two losses, and one draw.
In a brief statement, Fury stated, “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet.
“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, it has been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this; Dick Turpin wore a mask.”
Fury first gained international fame in 2015 when he stunned long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko to claim multiple titles, including the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight belts. After taking an extended break from the sport to address mental health challenges, he returned to the ring in 2018 and reclaimed glory by defeating Deontay Wilder in 2020 to secure the WBC title.
Fury’s promoter Frank Warren told Sky Sports: “Good luck to him, God bless him. I’m thrilled for him. I’ve been saying since his last fight whatever he chooses to do I support him 100 per cent.
“He’s done unbelievably great things for British boxing, world boxing. He’s been involved in some of the most exciting fights, certainly in the second coming, it’s been exciting fights every one of them.

“I’m delighted for him. I hope he and his family enjoy the fruits of his labour.”
Meanwhile, His decision to retire leaves fans disappointed, as it casts doubt on the possibility of a much-anticipated clash with fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua. Joshua recently expressed hope for the bout, stating during the Ring Magazine awards that a fight between them must happen this year.
However, Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, has questioned the finality of Fury’s announcement. Speaking to BBC Sport, Hearn said, “We’ve been here before. If that is the end, congratulations on a great career.
“One of the best heavyweights of this generation and made a bucket load of money. If your hearts not in it, if the fight has been punched out of you, it’s definitely time to call it quits.”
Hearn added that some might view Fury’s announcement as a strategic ploy but acknowledged the risks of continuing without genuine motivation:
Both Fury and Joshua have dominated the heavyweight division over the past decade, but they now face challenges in rejuvenating their careers. Joshua is seeking to recover from a recent loss to IBF champion Daniel Dubois, while Fury’s back-to-back defeats to Usyk have raised questions about his future in the sport.
Hearn remains optimistic about the prospect of a Fury-Joshua encounter, describing it as a fight that could be easily arranged. He stated, “I’m always an optimist. For me when that fight with AJ is a fight that can be made in two minutes in a room, I am always hopeful. But Tyson Fury’s earned the right to make his own decisions. If he’s done, he’s done. If not, then we make the biggest fight in the history of the sport. Only time will tell.”
